The results of the 2016 presidential election filled me with dread. I found myself desperately seeking ways to escape the onslaught of sexism, racism, and non-stop drama. Inspired by the fluid possibility of liquid porcelain and my love of complex layered textures, the process of making porcelain islands was calming. I used these early forms to escape into a self-created world of yummy forms and experimented with a candy inspired palette. Time passed and the dread morphed into actual horror. The Escape Islands evolved into the proactive Islands of Resistance, and have now become Islands of Resilience. These new works are intended to inspire and support a long-term sustained tenacity. The pieces in this series are talisman infused with the power of inner strength, community connection, humor, and the self-compassion required for a long-term resistance.
